The Poem of the Day: Ashbery/Martin

11/6/2012

Today's Poem of the Day is read by guest reader Adam Hu Gesher.

It might or might not have something to do with the democratic process.

"In which a poet begins a poem by one poet and abandons it in favour of a poem by another poet"

When The Sun Went Down , by John Ashbery; Resistance Movements Through History by Jynne Martin

You're quite lucky he continued with another poem. We went to a reading and he started with Waking in the Blue and he only got as far as 'the mare's nest of his drowsyy head' and then spent the next forty minutes explaining how to extract codeine from paracetamol and codeine tablets using the cold water extraction method, then he immediately picked up again from 'propped on The Meaning of Meaning'.

cold water extraction is the way we must gauge our evolutionary nature

That sounds true. He just said it was about the quickest way to do it if you're in a hotel room and can't smoke weed because of the smoke alarm.

My girlfriend thought it was a long poem but I'm pretty sure he was serious. I didn't hear any rhyming or anything.
