I Shot Reagan
by Adam Tedesco
You’re one sick motherfucker
That’s what our love is;
I might as well have written this to myself
I once forced myself to finish a beer
After eating too much fish
I felt salty foam rise up my throat toward my mouth
Pushing the entire meal out
Now I’m downing the last drop of my own bullshit
After eating all my blame, every deed, every victim
It’s a tremor
It moves through the drugs
Works like a hammer
Smashing me into something worthwhile
While I’m thankful for it
I get sad when I see myself in photographs
There’s no institution to turn to now
I lie too well
I enjoy the serenity of jail
The camaraderie of rehab
The self flagellation of religion
So they all stopped working
I want out of the whole
I don’t hate the outside world
I just love being inside you
Much, much more
I like lying down with my disease
And caressing it like a rabbit
I just don’t have much left in me anymore
Except chem-trails and thinning hair
Except sweatpants and clamminess
This sounds like nonsense
But then you probably don’t know me
And it’s best that way
