splashes

yesterday invisible ice cubes
freshened the calm side-

like a dehydrated seahorse
i swam, awkwardly, and semi-
alone, my best friend
keeping watch from the shallows

today my daughter burns
her hand  with grease,
runs it under the cold tap,
rebuffs my maternal concern,
with the same blistering  left hand

early this morning i watered her
vegetable garden
the newly planted azalea and pines

she will be all right

at about her age
this same kitchen began leaving scars-
and the same waters
healing them

the green  atlantic waves and waves
waves and waves and waves

"come you two,
  one last time...

quench the ouch of change."
