The Loss of Faith
after “Crazy Stuck in Pink” by Leslie Smith

by
David James
He smokes the King James Bible,
rips out pages from Exodus,
which seems appropriate to him.
Everyone dies, either willing and able
or panicked and in pain.
We’re all down here for the famous
trip until God calls out our names
and we plead for more time.
With each cough, there is a cuss
and then another page is torn.
It’s his book, dammit, and he aims
to smoke through the Old Testament
by this November or Christmas.
By the look of the flame
in his life, he knows exactly where this will end.

An FYI: This poem is by me: David James. The epigram should say "inspired by Leslie Smith." Hope this gets corrected. Thanks.
