Julian Talamantez Brolaski

It would seem that Julian Talamantez Brolaski is not so much preoccupied with elaborating a thought in a poetical text as with gathering together as many as possible ideas, words, linguistic associations and differing constructions within the framework of one poem. What is amazing is that both things are ultimately achieved. A wealth of formulation ranging from Shakespearian English to neologisms allied to vulgar expressions is convincingly combined in those poems that deal with life’s big themes: love, conflict, despair, politics, sex and identity. Brolaski uses politics, war or money to talk about matters such as identity, masculinity and vulnerability. His self-consciousness and poetic bravery result in sensitive yet overwhelming poetry that culminates in sharp insights into the times in which we live.
